The Maori language is one of three official languages of New Zealand. There were two other languages and they were an English language. The language (Te Reo) belongs to the Polynesian of Maori. The Polynesian language has roots in Asia. The early missionaries were the first people to make the Maori language written, but they only used English letters to make the Polynesian sounds. They have 15 letters in the alphabet, h, k, m, n, p, r, t, w, a, e, i, o, u, wh, and ng. Every syllable ends in a vowel.

There are many ways to say hello and good bye on in Maori, and here’s a list of some of them:
  • Kia ora - Hello
  • Kia ora tatou - Hello everyone
  • Tena koe - Greetings to you (said to one person)
  • Tena koutou - Greeting to you all
  • Haere mai - Welcome
  • Nau mai - Welcome
  • Kei te pehea koe? - How's it going?
  • Kei te pai - Good
  • Tino pai - Really good
  • Haere ra - Farewell
  • Ka kite ano - Until I see you again (Bye)
  • Hei konei ra - See you later

The Maori language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.
